Joann Fall Fabrics + McCall’s M7969

I

I’m so excited to share this dress with you all (that I made all the way back in MAY!) that I created for JOANN’s fall mailer that was recently sent out country wide. I got to choose a fabric from their fall 2020 release and I fell in love with this dalmation print; it’s fun but still feels neutral. This dress is so comfortable as well as stylish, I can see why there is so much hype for this pattern. It’s a real winner for me!

I chose this really pretty neutral dalmatian print poly crepe fabric and paired it with the recently trending McCall’s M7969 dress pattern. This fabric has really great drape to it and is very similar if not the same to my crane dress I made last fall. I added a gathered ruffle to the bottom of the dress and I raised the neckline for modesty. I am thrilled with how it turned out! The fit is awesome and I can’t get enough of these sleeves!!

Here are the exact alterations I made:

I added 3.5″ in width to the bottom of the front bodice and drew a line from that point up to the top of the neckline. This gives you a higher neckline. The wrap style neckline lays really nice and doesn’t require any snaps or pins to keep it closed. I also added 3.5″ in length to the bias binding pattern piece.

For the skirt, I made the length of the top part of the skirt 23.5″ long with the original width and the bottom skirt panel is 12.5″ long by 34.5″ wide. I sewed this piece to the top skirt piece using the same technique the pattern suggests using for the main skirt piece.

Head to JOANN.com or your nearest JOANN store to see their latest fall fabric drop!

You can find my shoes under $35 linked here, and my earrings under $10 linked here. I’m currently LOVING them both!

  1. I really love this dress! I saw it in the Joann’s flyer and thought I’d like to make a couple of them for Fall. I’m only 5′ tall. So I know I’ll have to shorten the length…maybe even leave the ruffle off. I, too, love those sleeves. I plan to make the dress out of a flowy, silky crepe fabric just as you have. I think it will be very comfortable for Fall/Winter. I must say, I almost decided not to make it because the neckline was so, so low. I’m not one for any “revealing” clothing…quite modest. And everywhere I’d be wearing this I’d be self-conscious if it was not a bit higher. So I do appreciate your photo showing what you did with the pattern piece. Thanks for sharing the details. I’m going to check out the rest of your blog. I’m 75 years old, but love to sew…especially for myself…but also for grandchildren and great grandchildren. 🙂 I’ll be subscribing to this blog. I came across it because I receive Bloglovin’ Daily Digest in my email. Thanks again!

    1. Hi Sherrie! I’m so glad you’re here! I agree with you, I would also feel uncomfortable with the neckline so low, especially while chasing my three kids around. You will love this pattern!! It’s so comfortable and not too challenging to put together. What lucky grandchildren and great grandchildren! I hope I can be like you one day! Happy sewing!

  2. I love this dress and can’t seem to purchase the pattern. It won’t come up. It gives me the wrong pattern when I ask for it.

  3. Hi,
I love your dress and I thank you for your photo showing how you made the v neck less revealing.
Did you size down? I’ve read other reviews that say the dress is very flowy and almost too big. Your dress fits you perfectly.

  4. Hello, I love how you put this together – could you please tell me the metrage and width of the fabric you used as I’m wanting to reserve some fabric before my pattern arrives 🙂
