Project Sew My Style January: Toaster Sweater

Happy Toaster Sweater month! I’m so excited for my first Project Sew My Style post. This month was all about the Toaster Sweater #2 by Sew House Seven. I love this pattern, and it holds so many possibilities depending on the type of fabric you use. This toaster sweater is a mash-up of Toaster Sweater #1 and #2, and I’m excited to show you how I combined the two.

If you are just hearing about Project Sew My Style, it’s not too late to join in. Simply fill out this form. What is Project Sew My Style? It’s a month to month sew along using one particular pattern per month, so that by the end of 2017 you have 12 gorgeous handmade items you’ve added to your wardrobe. Above all, #SewMyStyle is all about raising awareness about the slow fashion movement and about encouraging young women to take up sewing. We want to show you that sewing your own wardrobe isn’t an unachievable dream.

The patterns are fabulous, check out the schedule:

For my toaster sweater, I used this hacci oatmeal sweater knit from Stylish Fabric. It’s a lighter weight fabric than what’s meant to be used for the pattern, but I love the slouchy fit as a result. Also, Stylish Fabric is offering a 20% OFF coupon code: “SARA” to all of my readers. (This fabric just went on sale for $5.90, so cheap!). There’s lots of other great sweater knits on sale too. Take a look!

When I first saw this pattern, I loved different aspects of both options, and I knew I would combine them into one. I used the top of the Toaster Sweater #1 and combined it with the bottom of Toaster Sweater #2. I literally laid the toaster #1 bodice on top of the toaster #2 bodice aligning the underarm corners. Then, I folded the top of the #2 bodice down behind #1 so I can just peel the pattern pieces apart if I decide to make them how they were originally designed to be made.

I also added 2″ in length to both the front and back bodice pieces.

You can see how I folded #2 behind #1 and taped it down:

I followed the directions for toaster #1 until it was time to sew up the side seams, then I switched over to the sewing instructions for toaster #2.

It’s a simple hack, and I’m excited to try it again in a heavier weighted knit. Love love love this sweater!! It’s been so fun to see all of your toasters popping up all month too. So much inspiration!

Next month is the Saunio Cardigan by Named Clothing! Still narrowing down fabrics but I can’t wait to sew it up. It’s not something I would typically wear and I’m excited to be pushed outside of my comfort zone a little and try something new. Can’t wait to see what you all come up with! Happy sewing everyone!

  1. Love the hack you did! I made a Toaster 1 and Toaster 2 and totally agree with linking different aspects of both of them. I might need to try this!

I am loving #SewMyStyle for the same reasons you mentioned – it is totally pushing me outside my comfort zone and having me sew patterns I am not normally drawn to. I can’t decide which fabric to use for next month, but I blogged about a couple options yesterday – choices, choices, choices!

  2. Thanks for the coupon code! I just placed my first order with them – high hopes! And I love the Toaster. I bought #2 on its own but the mashup is making me wish I had gotten the bundle.
